The " I DON'T CARE " Signet Ring French Antique HEAVY 19g 18k Gold Solid Shield Eagle Lion Fleur De Lis Chunky Unisex
ABOUT:
Fabulously chunky and satirical signet wax seal ring which is reverse engraved with a shield with lions and fleur de lis below an eagle, and around the bottom is a Latin proverb reverse engraved: "Nec Habeo, Nec Curom, Nec Peto". This phrase, so called Wither's Motto translates to: "I have not, I lack not, I care not." Or "I do not have, I do not lack, I do not care." This phrase came from George Wither's satirical poem published in 1621.
The phrase counteracts the idea that getting more and having more is the solution to life's problems. This saying instead declares the opposite: I don't have it, I don't need it, and I don't care about it. Or could also literally be read as: I don't cling to anything, and so, I don't really feel lacking in anything, therefore, I am not worried (I am carefree).
This chunky and heavy signet would be appropriate for man or woman. Aside from the clever proverb, it has wonderful graphics and a beautiful buttery glow with rosy highlights from patina to the 18k gold. I got this in Paris.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
HALLMARKS:
French hallmark for 18k on the back.
Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Ring is currently about a size 10 1/4. Weighs 18.9g so it is quite the golden nugget. Ring face is 17mm north south by 14mm wide with the oval face slightly convex.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Surface wear, nicks and scratches that can catch the light due to the original mirrored finish which has worn with time as the ring was clearly enjoyed. The edges are a bit blunt but a lot of thick gold used in the making of this one so it has a great quality hand feel. Still deeply engraved, clear and legible.
There are no dark spots to the gold, it was just difficult to photograph because it reflects its surroundings.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
